Swimmers capture 15-team Woodburn title

Sweet Home’s boys handily took first place and the girls second at the 15-team Woodburn Invitational swimming meet Saturday.

“We swam very well,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “I’m very happy. We took 23 kids and 22 of them placed and scored points. Many had lifetime and season best times.”

Rhys Birky and Sean Martin paced the Husky scoring drive with four wins each.

Birkey posted meet records in the breast stroke in 1:04.3, 200 IM (2:04.2) and swam on the record setting 200 medley relay (1:49.6) along with Ecker, Bate and Martin.

Ecker and Bate won three events on the day.

“We didn’t have any girl champions but we did exactly what we need to do if we want to place at district and that was to place a lot of girls,” Coach Peargin said.

In the girls division, Cascade lived up to their reputation.

“They’re tough,” Coach Peargin said. “But after them, between Stayton, us, Junction City and Philomath, there won’t be many points separating second through fifth place at district.”

Sweet Home and Junction City are the two top boys contenders, Coach Peargin said.

“We get to see Junction City again on Saturday. They match up against us very well,” Coach Peargin said.

The Huskies racked up 695.50 points in the combined ratings. They were followed by Cascade, 460; LaSalle, 431; Valley Catholic, 421; Woodburn, 394; Newport, 334; The Dalles, 303; Taft, 243; North Marion, 198.5; Rainier, 168; Dallas, 165; Molalla, 163; Tillamook, 156; Nestucca, 34; Toledo, 30.
