Thanks to a scheduling conflict at the Newport Aquatic Center, Newport High School hosted its annual swimming invitational at Lebanon High School Friday, Jan. 31.
The meet featured some coastal-area teams Sweet Home doesn’t see often, as well as Valley Catholic.
Sweet Home’s girls were still the top team in the pool, winning with 382.5 points over Lebanon (268) while the Newport boys proved that they may be making a run at a back-to-back state title, winning 289-235 over second-place Taft.
“Our last road trip turned out to be a little closer to home than we thought,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “This was a good meet for us because we got to see four teams we haven’t been able to see up to now.”
Individual winners for Sweet Home were Chloe Tyler in the 200 Freestyle and 100 Backstroke, Malia Hewitt in the 200 Individual Medley, and Megan Hager in the 50 and 100 freestyles.
The Huskies are healthy and still swimming strong, Peargin said. They posted 12 individual personal bests from eight swimmers, including double PR’s from Hailey Armendariz in the 200 IM and the 100 Backstroke, Meagan Baham in the 50 and 100 freestyles, William Hawken in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke, and Micah Wright in the 200 and 500 freestyles. Others posting personal bests were Hunter Calderwood in the 200 IM, Alaina Curtis in the 50 Freestyle, Isabel Sayer in the 500 Freestyle, and Annaleea Shuttlesworth in the 100 Butterfly.
The Huskies will host Junction City, North Marion and Stayton in their final home meet of the season at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 6, which will also be Senior Day.
Districts will be Friday and Saturday, Feb. 14 and 15, at the South Albany pool. Newport Winter Invitational
