With the district meet a week away, Sweet Home’s swimmers finished off the dual meet season with wins over North Marion on both the boys and girls sides Thursday, Feb. 3.
It was also the final home meet for seniors Derek Jaques, Wes Clarkson, Brandon Courteau, Alex Stupin, Josh Liskey, Sami Webb, Niccole Simmonds, Megan Sanderson, Rozaliya Minigulova and Cheryl Wilson, a “sad but special occasion,” Coach Doug Peargin said.
“The rest of our team started to realize what big shoes they would have to fill next year,” he said. “As a coach it’s sad to think that you won’t have these kids around the pool next year – but the good news is they’ll always be my friends.”The girls won nine of 11 events, with 17 of their performances personal bests.
“They all swam well,” Peargin said.
Sophomore Naomi Gunselman swam the third-fastest 200 individual medley in school history (2:20.53) to win that event and also was first in the 100 butterfly. Sweet Home won all three of the relays on both the boys and girls sides.
Other individual winners for the girls were Sami Webb in the 100 and 200 freestyles, Kimber Swanson in the 50 freestyle, and Niccole Simmonds in the 500 freestyle.
On the boys side, Sweet Home won 10 of the 11 events. Individual winners were Zac Pearce in the 200 and 500 freestyles, Don Rockstead in the 200 individual medley and the 100 freestyle, Gravy Gunselman in the 500 freestyle and 100 butterfly, and Derek Jaques in the 100 breaststroke.
Sweet Home recorded 15 PR’s and Pearce’s 1:48.4 in the 200 freestyle was the fourth-fastest in school history.
With districts this Friday and Saturday at South Albany High School’s aquatic center, the Huskies are cutting back on morning practices, which, Peargin said, should result in “a lot more energy” for his swimmers.
Swimming begins at 10 a.m. on both days, with finals on Saturday. Cost each day is $6 for adults, $4 for students and seniors. Heat sheets are $2.
Peargin said he believes Philomath should be favored on the boys side and Stayton will be the team to beat for the girls.
