Sweet Home’s swimming teams defeated visitors Salem Academy and Junction City Friday, Dec. 4, to end their Christmas break.
Three girls finished with four wins each, counting legs on winning relays – freshmen Makayla Nelson and Esther Gunselman, and senior Naomi Gunselman. Nelson won the 200 (2:05) and 500 (5:38.3) Freestyles, while Esther Gunselman was first in the 50 Freestyle (27.6), then turned around and won the next event, the 100 Butterfly (1:12.5). Naomi Gunselman was first in the 200 IM (2:21.2) and the 100 Backstroke (1:05.2).
Justin Hilburn and Victor Stupin each won three events for the boys, counting two winning relays.
Hilburn won the 200 Freestyle (2:07.4), while Stupin took the 200 IM (2:25.4). Zane Jackson was the Huskies’ other winner, taking the 50 Freestyle in 26.6.
The Huskies have four more meets before the district championships on Feb. 8-9, starting with the Cascade Invitational held Friday, Jan. 11, at South Albany, the same pool in which the district meet will be held.
“This gives our kids a chance to compete and get used to the surroundings before our district meet,” Coach Doug Peargin said. Five other district teams will be there as well.
