Swimmers finish dual meets 18-0 with wins over N. Marion

It’s been a good year for the Sweet Home swim teams, and now the Huskies are about to find out how good they really are.

Sweet Home’s girls beat North Marion 111-56 Thursday in their final home appearance, while the boys outscored the visitors 111-45.

Both the boys and girls are 18-0 in dual meet competition and Coach Doug Peargin says they are ready for the big stage. The district meet will be held at 9 a.m. Friday, Feb. 9, and Saturday, Feb. 10, at the South Albany Aquatic Center.

The only winner for North Marion’s girls was Jessica Garinger, who took the 100 freestyle (57.33) and the 100 backstroke (1:04.67), both events in which she placed fourth at last year’s state meet. For the Huskies, Justine Calhoon won the 500 freestyle (6:02.28) and the 100 breaststroke (1:17.39) . Other winners were Nichole Martin in the 200 freestyle (2:16.24), Alyshia Benzo in the 200 individual medley (2:32.51), Jessica Trautwein in the 50 freestyle (27.07) and Sarah Rosa in the 100 butterfly (1:06.70).

For the boys, North Marion had one individual winner in Zach Cuellar in the 500 Freestyle (5:36.87), who placed eighth in the event at state last year as a freshman. Cole Stumbough led a near-sweep by the Huskies, placing first in the 50 freestyle (23:39) and the 100 freestyle (51.85). Freshman Michael Simmonds was also a double winner for Sweet Home, placing first in the 200 freestyle (2:04.31) and the 100 backstroke (1:07.76). Other Husky winner were Brinden Sanders in the 200 IM (2:16.65) and Kieran Schaefer in the 100 butterfly (1:01.64).

“We’re coming to the end of a great season,” Peargin said. He said that Sweet Home’s schedule has been focused toward preparing the Huskies for district and state through a series of “progressive steps that puts them at the top of their game at the end of the season.

“A schedule has a lot to do with how ready you are at District and State by meeting the right competition at precisely the right time,” he said.

The district meet will bring together from Blanchet, Cascade, Central, Colton, Jefferson, Junction City, Marist, Philomath, Sisters, Stayton and Sweet Home, all of whom Sweet Home has met in meets this season. Sweet Home will be looking for a district championship and several individual berts for both boys and girls, as well as relay team berths, in the state meet at Mt. Hood Community College in Gresham on Feb. 16-17.

All individual and relay district champions automatically qualify for state and the next eight fastest times in the state will also go.

“We’re really hopeful we can get eight to 10 swimmers to the state championships,” Peargin said.
