Sweet Home’s boys won the Stayton Invitational swim meet Thursday, Dec. 29, while the girls wound up in a dead-even tie with the hosts.
The meet, held in Stayton’s metric pool – nearly all other high school pools in the state are 25-yard pools – was chance to shake off the rust for the Huskies, Coach Doug Peargin said.
“After two weeks of daily doubles over the Christmas break, we were ready to have a little fun with a swim meet,” he said. “The kids have worked hard during the two-week break. We’ve had great attendance, hard practices, along with a little sickness, but despite all of the above we swam real well as a team.”
The boys scored 137 points, far ahead of second-place Stayton’s 62. In addition to wins in all three relays, individual winners for the boys were Zac Pearce, who led a 1-2-3 Husky finish in the 200 freestyle (2:10.07), Gravy Gunselman in the 50 Freestyle (27.17), Cory Martin in the 100 Backstroke (1:21.50), Sten Weld in the 400 Freestyle (5:45.66),Victor Stupin in the 100 Freestyle (1:05.35) and Don Rockstead in the 200 Individual Medley (2:37.12).
For the girls, who scored 100 points to tie Stayton, ahead of Cascade (87), Naomi Gunselman was a double winner, taking the 50 Freestyle (30.64) and 100 Freestyle (1:07.53). Other winners were Kimber Swanson in the 200 IM (3:05.70) and Emily Thompson in the 100 Breaststroke (1:32.49).
Peargin noted that the Stayton meet marks the half-way point for the Huskies’ season.
“From this point on we’ll really start looking for events that our swimmers will be swimming in the district and state meets,” he said. “Our girls and boys teams are defending district champions and have their work cut out for them again this year. We still have some hard work and some big meets in front of us. We’ll just have to see who’s willing to step up to the challenge.”
Next up for the Huskies is a home meet with Central and Salem Academy at 4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6.
