Swimmers short on bodies, not effort, at Philomath

Thanks to the Winter Formal at Sweet Home High School, the school’s swim team fielded a reduced line-up at Saturday’s Philomath Invitational, but some Huskies who participated delivered some significant performances.

“I told the kids to go to (the formal) because I knew how late the Philomath Invitational would probably last,” Coach Doug Peargin said.

Six swimmers made the trip to the 11-team meet, with both the boys and the girls placing ninth. Team scores were not available. Salem Academy finished first on both sides, with Philomath second for the girls and Newport for the boys.

All four boys who swam posted PR’s in their events, Peargin said. Freshmen Bradley Wolthuis improved six seconds in the 200 Individual Medley and 10 seconds in the 100 Butterfly; freshman Dakota Seward cut 11 seconds from his best time in the 500 Freestyle; and freshman Tanner Sayers posted a 5-second PR in the 100 Freestyle.

Senior Shelby Dinsfriend, a newcomer to swimming, posted a personal best as well in the 50 Freestyle.

The Huskies will swim at North Marion Thursday.
