Sweet Home’s boys and girls were the top teams in a five-team swim competition hosted by the Huskies Saturday, Dec. 14.
The girls finished well ahead of second-place Marist, 232-142, with Philomath (109), Cascade (101) and Riverside (10) rounding out the scoring.
The boys also finished ahead of Marist, 110-88, ahead of Philomath (69) and Cascade (41).
“The kids did really well,” Coach A Jay Bronson said. “They performed better than we thought they would against these district opponents. I didn’t expect to be that far ahead (in the final team scoring).”
The boys won both freestyle relays and the girls won the 200 Medley Relay and the 400 Freestyle Relay.
Double winners for the girls were Kirsten Sautel in the 200 Freestyle and the 100 Breaststroke and Khloe Sautel in the 200 Individual Medley and the 500 Freestyle. Lexi Rundell won the 50 Freestyle, Daisy Lalonde in the 100 Freestyle, and Peyton Markell in the 100 Backstroke.
Austyn Hogan won the 50 and 100 freestyles for the boys, and Grayson Savri and Arman Marble added individual wins in the 200 IM and the 500 Freestyle, respectively.
Savri, a freshman, was named Swimmer of the Meet for the Huskies after setting two personal bests in the relays.
Bronson said coaches “weren’t shocked, but we were happy” particularly by performances from Khloe Sautel in the 200 IM and Hogan in the 50 Freestyle, and the boys Medley Relay, which finished four seconds ahead of Philomath.
“We need to do some fine-tuning, which we’ll do in the next couple of weeks,” he said, noting that the team will be in “kind of a mini state meet” competition on Jan. 4 when Sweet Home hosts Newport, La Grande, Molalla, Salem Academy, Marshfield, Cascade Christian, Cove and Baker – all typically significant players at the state level in the 4A/3A/2A/1A Division.
“It’s still early; anything could happen. We can’t take anything for granted.”
Up next, the Huskies will swim at Lebanon at 11:45 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 21, in their last meet before Christmas. Teams expected include Molalla, North Bend, Newport and Astoria.
