Sweet Home won the girls competition at the Stayton Invitational swim meet Dec. 23, and the boys tied for first with Salem Academy.
Though the Huskies were missing some top swimmers, particularly on the girls side, they still had enough to do the job – and post some personal bests along the way.
Junior Sean Wolthuis PR’d in both his events, winning the 400 Freestyle and taking second in the 200 IM.
“This is one of those meets that it’s hard to tell how well you did – or didn’t do – because this is the only meter pool that we swim in for any of our events, so times aren’t the same as yard times,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “We swam pretty well as a team.”
Others posting PR’s were Rawlins Lupoli in the 100 Freestyle, Wesley Parker in the 200 Freestyle, Craig Hansen in the 50 Freestyle, Dakota Seward in the 400 Freestyle, Milah Weld in the 100 Butterfly, Ella Parker in the 400 Freestyle – a 19-second improvement over her previous best at that distance as she won the race, and Hope Fears in the 100 Backstroke.
Sweet Home will swim at noon Saturday, Jan. 2, in the Lebanon Invitational, which will include 5A Division Bend, Marist, South Albany and 4A power North Bend, which edged the Sweet Home girls for the state title last year by half a point.
This is the first time in years that Sweet Home has participated in a meet with larger-school teams and Peargin said the Huskies will be ready.
“We’ll be shooting hard for this one,” he said.
