Teamwork key to wrestlers’ Oregon Classic win

Teamwork was the name of the game last weekend for Sweet Home’s wrestlers as they won the 4A division of the Oregon Wrestling Classic in Redmond.

The championship was a group effort on all levels, Coach Steve Thorpe said.

“This was one of the most unselfish displays of wrestling that I’ve had of any team I’ve coached,” Thorpe said. “We had guys who came as extras, who didn’t get to wrestle, but who were there just in case we needed them. We had guys who wrestled up a division because that would make us a stronger team. We had some average-level kids, some young kids, who just competed their hearts out.”

The Huskies basically rolled over the competition, opening 81-0 against a thin Sisters squad in the first round, then dispatching sixth-ranked Illinois Valley 61-18 in the second. In their third and final dual of the day Friday, the Huskies faced fourth-ranked North Marion, which they edge 39-38 at home in December while they were awaiting the arrival of some football players and a couple of wrestlers recovering from injuries. This time it was different, as they rolled over North Marion 42-26. After a 76-6 win Saturday morning against Estacada, Sweet Home beat Cascade 40-21 in the semifinals and then took fifth-ranked Henley in the final, 45-24. Henley defeated the Huskies 49-24 in their season opener in December.

“For us to do what we did was pretty incredible,” Thorpe said.

Among the more impressive achievements was freshman 103-pounder Colton Schilling’s pin of top-ranked Garrett Heinetz of Estacada, a senior, in 36 seconds.

Schilling, Taylor Tagle and Brock Crocker all went undefeated, Crocker wrestling up a division at 160. Kris Newport also wrestled up, at 152, losing only to North Marion’s Cody Randall, the top-ranked 145-pounder in the division.

Thorpe said that seniors Tyler Holly, Mitch Grove and Marshall Arndt showed leadership, and that younger wrestlers Wade Paulus, Zach Gill, Schilling, Colby DeCleve and Tyler Cowger “did a great job.”

“We worked hard for it,” he said. “What we’ve done to prepare for this is not fun, but it’s a necessity if you want to win the Oregon Classic.”

Sweet Home’s top wrestlers will be back in action Wednesday night, Jan. 13, when they and a group of other valley all-star wrestlers host a cultural exchange team from Japan at 6:30 p.m. On Thursday the Huskies will travel to Philomath for a Val-Co League dual at 6 p.m., then travel to Salem on Saturday for a tournament at Sprague at 9 a.m.

“We celebrated the (Oregon Classic) win for a short time,” Thorpe said. “Now we have to focus on wrestling Philomath on Thursday and the Salem tournament on Saturday.”
