Sweet Home Mat Club sent 21 wrestlers to the Redmond Oregon Classic Qualifying Tournament Jan. 7. Ten placed in the top three to qualify to join the Sweet Home High wrestlers at the Oregon Classic next weekend at the Deschutes County Fairgrounds.
Champion in the 55-pound Midget division was Tyler Schilling with one pin, two technical falls and two decisions. Second-place finishers, with only one loss for the day, were Colton Schilling, Brandon Keenon, Ian Search, Austin Bruijn, Tyler Holly, Ryan Binks and Kris Newport. Third-placers were Nate Melcher and Barrett Stephens. Receiving medals for finishing fourth were Kobe and Trever Olson.
“Some of our less experienced kids wrestled well adding to the depth of our club for the day. We sure appreciated the parents, relatives and friends that came to support our wrestlers,” said Coach Steve Schilling, who was assisted by Greg Newport, Scott Melcher, Lonnie Keenon and Leon Olson.
The Kids competition of the Oregon Classic begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Redmond.
