Terry Shank takes title in Double D Karaoke contest

Terry Shank was named the winner of the fourth annual Double D Karaoke contest Saturday night at the Sweet Home Veterans Club.

Before a standing room only audience, Shank and nine other finalists tried for their share of more than $2,100 in cash and prizes.

Shank won $500, followed by runn-er-up Dean Lebret ($305), Trisha Melcher in third ($260), Bob Briana fourth ($150) and fifth-place winner Mindy Clay ($100).

Organizer Debbie Jewell said the other finalists received gift certificates and prizes donated by local merchants.

“This contest would not be possible without the participation of our local merchants and community members, most of whom have donated all four years,” Jewell said.

Competitors had to sing two songs on Saturday. Shank sang “Piano Man” by Billy Joel as his final number to win.

“I think there were a lot of nervous people, not only singing but also in the audience,” Jewell said.

Besides the winning singers, a teddy bear that sings the national anthem was raffled off to winner Elsie Tucker. Since Tucker died recently, her daughter was present to collect her prize, Jewell said.

New this year was an audience choice award. Ballots were passed out to the audience before the contest started. After the first round of songs were finished, the audience voted for their favorite and the ballots were collected and counted. Krissy Felkins won a pair of one-day passes donated by the Oregon Jamboree.

Dennis Lindsay for the Sons Of AmVets accepted the Top Donor Appreciation Award on behalf of his organization.

Judges for the final were David Holley, Mark Burdell and Cliff Dominy.
