Tigers earn Tri-County League mat title; state tourney March 7

Tiger wrestlers recently completed an outstanding mat season, winning the district tournament held in Sweet Home and one held at Central Linn.

Coached by Shannon Stover and Louie Dix, the Tigers crowned five district champions on their home mats.

“We had a great season,” Coach Dix said. “We ended the season with 40 kids, which is very good. We had a good mix of both younger kids and kids with experience. We were able to work with the high school program to provide trainining at a variety of levels.”

Coach Dix said the Tigers showed a “lot of heart” with five winning championships at the junior varsity district tournament as well.

“We had some very good sixth graders on the team who will enter junior high next fall,” Coach Dix said. “Several of our younger wrestlers placed well at district and that’s exciting for next year’s potential.”

Team scores were: Sweet Home, 144; Lebanon, 125; Neil Armstrong, 93; Cascade, 81; North Marion, 72; Sherwood, 66; LaCreole, 58; Stayton, 53; Silverton, 51; French Prairie, 47; Molalla, 45; Valor, 40; Dunaway, 38; Santiam Christian, 12.

Placings for the Tigers included: 75 lbs.-Chad Workman, fifth; 81-Travis Pugh, champion; 86-Jack Perry, third; 101-Nick Pitts, second; 106: Ridge McKinney, 106; 111-Cody Sells, champion; 116-Cody Carr, sixth; 123-Andrew Knight, fourth; 137: Sawyer Anderson, second; 146-Bo Christianson, champion; 156-Brent Woody, second; 166-Ben Brewer, second; heavyweight-Cody Cummings, second.

“It was exciting to be able to work with the kids,” Coach Dix said. “We had tremendous support from the high school coaches and our junior high athletic director.”

The Tigers will compete March 7 at the junior high state championship tournament to be held at Woodburn.
