Tillamook 70, Sweet Home 56

The Huskies lost its grip on an early lead at home against Tillamook on Jan. 3, losing the game 70-56.

“We actually shot the ball fairly well,” said Coach Kostanty Knurowski. “The story of that game was rebounding.”

Tillamook had a lot more size and rebounded 2-1 against the Huskies, he said. Even with good defense, Tillamook still grabbed the rebounds and put them back up.

“I was pleased with our effort,” Knurowski said. They competed well through the end of the game.

The Huskies played best in the first quarter, with Christian Porter draining a pair of threes and the team building a 16-13 lead, Knurowski said.

They held a lead until about three minutes left in the half when Tillamook dropped a three to tie the game, sparking a Tillamook run to halftime, with Tillamook leading 31-25. Tillamook kept the momentum into the second half, building a 48-37 lead and then outscoring the Huskies 22-19 in the final quarter.

The Huskies press caused Tillamook some problems, Knurowski said, and Tillamook didn’t shoot especially well. Now and then, Tillamook would settle down against the press, but a lot of times, it wasn’t the first shot that hurt the Huskies. It was the second and third.

Porter led the Huskies with four threes and a total of 14 points. Dallas Morgan added back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter, and Grant Kauffman, Brice Vandenberg and Tony Ramirez each had one. Tillamook had three from three different players.

Cascade 89, Sweet Home 66

In a story similar to Tillamook, the Huskies lost 89-66 at Cascade on Friday night.

“To be honest, the Cascade game was fairly similar,” Knurowski said. The Huskies shot well early on and then struggled in the second and third quarters.

At the end of the first quarter, the team seems to lose focus, he said. “Second quarter and third quarter, we’re kind of forgetting where we’re supposed to be in the press or on defensive assignments.”

On offense, that lack of focus is putting a player out of position, and Cascade exploited it, Knurowski said.

The Huskies led 20-17 after one quarter while trailing 41-30 by halftime. Cascade led 64-44 by the end of the third quarter, and Cascade outscored the Huskies 25-22 in the final quarter.

The Huskies scored six threes. Morgan had three, Conn had two, and Kauffman had one, while Cascade’s Jared Everetts hit three threes.
