‘Tired’ girls lose twice in basketball, to La Pine and Harrisburg

The Huskies lost two games last week in girls basketball, 59-46 to La Pine at home Dec. 23 and 56-29 at Harrisburg Friday.

Against La Pine, Sweet Home built a 20-16 lead in the first quarter, but La Pine made up ground in the second to lead 27-25 at halftime before breaking away in the third quarter to lead 45-33 at the end of the third quarter.

“I think that we just got tired,” said Coach Michelle Knight. “We’ve played a lot of basketball in a short period of time.”

The team continues to struggle with illness and injury, and Katie Miller has not played since Dec. 21, leaving just seven varsity players and one swing player who can play one quarter.

“Any time anybody’s missing, we really, well, miss them,” Knight said.

Brooke Burke led scoring with 25 points. Becky Belcher added 12; Natalie Rodgers, three; Adaira Burger, three; Kirsten Watkins, three; and Hannah Powell, one. Emmily Aarness led La Pine scoring with 27 points, and Bayleigh Harrison added 11.

Friday, Harrsiburg built a quick lead and dominated the game, leading 13-7 after the first quarter and 30-13 at halftime. By the end of the third quarter, Sweet Home trailed 47-20.

“They’re a quick team,” Knight said. “We just couldn’t find our rhythm the enter game.”

Burke led the Huskies with 13 points. Burger added seven; Watkins, three, Danielle Tressel, two, Belcher, two and Rodgers, two.

“I am still optimistic, and I still feel like we have a chance of winning some games,” Knight said, adding that if the Huskies can stay healthy and injury free, it can “be a successful season.”

Sweet Home, 5-5, will host Elmira (1-7) at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 3. They host Woodburn to open league play on Jan. 10.
