Sweet Home’s track and field athletes have been feeling the pain of intense workouts and in their meet at Taft on April 20 the Huskies weren’t at full strength.
“We’ve got some kids that are kind of banged up,” Coach Billy Snow said. “Little things here and there. We’re being very conservative in our line-ups. We’d much rather work the kids hard in practice than in meets.”
Team scores were not posted for the meet and placings were not clear in some events, so scoring afterward was difficult.
With many normally top performers competing in events that weren’t usual for them, there weren’t many PRs, but the Huskies still came away with some victories.
Sophomore Nick Hall ran his first 800 of his high school career, winning in 2:11.1; Jake Comstock won the 110 hurdles in 15.67 and Keenan Martin was first in the 300 hurdles, running 49.39 on a windy track. Both boys relay teams came in first as well.
Martin also won the javelin with a throw of 132-8.
Willie Jones notched his third straight PR to win the shot with a throw of 43-0 1/2, an improvement of more than 3 feet in six meets for the senior from New Zealand, who has never competed in the event before this year.
Daniel Jeffreys and Dakotah Keys both cleared 5-6 to lead the high jump, while Alex Coakley was first in the long jump in 17-4 1/2.
The only individual winner for the girls on the track was Sami Webb, who took first in the 3000, her first race at that distance, in 12:13.6. The girls 4×100 relay team won in 54.22.
In the throwing events, Laura Mauer was first in the shot with 26-10, while Annie Whitfield won the javelin with a toss of 109-5.
After a trip to Philomath on Tuesday this week, the Huskies will send some of their top performers to Klamath Falls Saturday for the Sterling Bank Invitational at Oregon Institute of Technology, the first time they have competed in that meet, which is expected to include eight teams from northern California and four from Nevada, in addition to 22 Oregon teams ranging from 1A to 5A.
Snow said he plans to curtail his athletes, limiting them to three or less events and not focusing on matchups.
“We don’t gain anything by doing that,” he said. “We’re trying to put them in events they’re strongest in, where they’ll have a good race, where they’ll have a good shot.
“I don’t think hardly any of those teams (in the meet) are teams we normally see. That’s going to the nice thing about it €“ we’ll see some competition we don’t normally see. It’ll be a big meet for the kids. They’ll see some great competition.
