On Tuesday, the Husky tracksters visited Independence and the Central Panthers. Philomath was there also to make it a triangular meet.
“Weatherwise, it was one of those days where we were in survival mode,” Coach Billy Snow said. ” It had rained hard before we got there and except for a brief respite, rained throughout the meet. Additionally, it got colder as the meet progressed. As a result, we were looking for effort, not PR’s because the conditions were just horrible.”
There was water running across the discus ring, in front of the high jump mats, and covering the back stretch out to lane five. It was the first time I had seen a pump used to remove water from the track before a meet, Coach Snow said. Unfortunately, it didn’t help much. Add to that the fact that Central does not have covered stands and it was day to remember.
Boys Results
Final team score on the guys side were very tight with Sweet Home coming out on top with 62, Philomath second with 60 and Central third with 53.
“We were holding some people out of events due to injury, illness, and absences so it was a great sign for the guys that they could hold their own with Philomath especially,” Coach Snow said. ” The guys won 5 of the 10 events on the track, starting with the short relay team of Seth Graves, Robert McGarry, Randy Nicholson, and Paris Ramsey with a time of 45.80a.”
Randy won the 100M in 11.65, a big PR and probably the #3 time in our league this year. Chris Burford won the 400M in a time of 55.9 with Ian Lynn third in 56.9 and Mike Lummus fourth in 57.2.
Ramsey came back to run a great 200M, winning in a season PR time of 22.60a despite easing up at the end.

In the field events, the rain definitely held the marks down, with only two PR’s on the day. Matt Slauson won both the shot (46-11) and the discus (137-00). Mike Severns won the javelin in a tight competition at 151-11.
Randy Nicholson took second in the long jump despite taking only two jumps with a leap of 19-07.5. Seb Strickler was fourth in the triple jump with a leap of 35-04.
In the vault, Robert McGarry went 12-00 for second with Mike Barnes earning a PR at 10-00 for fourth. Ben Schmidt also had a non scoring PR of 8-00.
Other field PRs came from Casey Baarson (119-08) and Tom Helfrich (82-00) in the javelin.
Girls Results
The girls finished second overall with Philomath first at 76, followed by Sweet Home at 57, and Central third at 37.
“To be that close to a team like Philomath is great for our girls squad, especially considering they were not nearly at full strength for the same reasons as the guys,” Coach Snow said. ” The girls had a great meet overall although they were disappointed in their times and marks. Again the weather played a big role in that.”
On the track, Anne Helfrich had the girls’ lone win with a victory in the 1500M at 5:33.98a. Lisa Brocard was second in the 300M hurdles in 52.91a. Megan Snow had a pair of third placings, scoring in the 1500M (5:50.53a) and the 3000M in 13:03.45a.
The other third place came from Ashley Smith who had a PR 14.23a in the 100M in her first individual race in about three weeks as she is coming back from injury.
Kari McGuyre had a fourth place finish in the 200M (32.80a) as did Anne in the 800m with a PR 2.46.33a.
Other PRs on the track came from Elissa McCartin in the 400M in 72.7. In the field, PR’s were rare but effort was not.
“Our girl throwers again had another awesome day,” Coach Snow said. “Out of 9 scoring opportunities, our girls got eight of those.”
Krystle Streight led a sweep of the shot put winning at 33-05. Rachel Gaskey was second at 32-02 with Meaghan Schaefer third at 29-11. Amber Larsen, throwing JV, would have finished fourth if the Huskies were not limited to three varsity entrants per event.
In the discus, Gaskey led the 1-2-3 sweep with a near PR of 107-01. Streight PR’ed at 96-08 for second as did Shaina Burnett at 86-09 for third.
Megan Hershberger had a throw of 79-09 at the JV level which would have placed her fourth overall. Catherine Fletcher also had a PR at 57-09.
In the discus, Gaskey again led the Huskies, throwing 88-06 for second with Lisa Brocard (88-02) third and Meaghan Schaefer third at 66-09. Kim Lovik, coming back from some shoulder problems threw 78-09 at the JV level which would have placed her fourth overall.
In the long jump, Lisa had only one legal jump at 14-07.5 but is was good enough for the win by nearly a foot. Nicki Emmert was third in the triple jump at 27-08. Kari McGuyre took first in the high jump at 4-04 with Elissa McCartin third at 4-02. In the pole vault, Alisha Basham was second at 6-06.
