Sweet Home’s track and field athletes enjoyed what amounted to a pretty perfect day, weather-wise, Monday, April 9, as they hosted their annual “Last Chance” meet in preparation for this Saturday’s Meet of Champions.
The purpose of the meet, which included five schools from lower OSAA divisions – Creswell, Harrisburg, Lowell, Monroe and Oregon School for the Deaf, was to give athletes one more chance to qualify for MOC, which has standards in each event that must be met.
Coach Dakotah Keys said he was happy with Sweet Home’s first home competition of the season – and the third overall for his athletes.
“The meet went smoothly – no big hiccups,” he said. “We had great weather and the kids are having a good time. We had lots of season’s bests, lots of PRs.”
Indeed, the Huskies posted personal best times and marks in seemingly every event, especially the younger athletes, who have improved exponentially.
“We have a lot of good stuff going on in the javelin,” Keys said. “We had a lot of PRs from the women.”
Senior Bethany Gingerich was a triple winner for the girls, taking first in the 100, the 400 and the 300 hurdles. Sophomore Megan Hager won the discus.
On the boys side, junior Noah Dinsfriend won both hurdles races for the Huskies. Other winners were freshman Tristan Calkins in the 400, in a personal-best 55.51, sophomore Casey Tow in the 800, also in a PR of 2:05.36, Jake Swanson in the javelin with a PR of 161-4, and Austin Stevens in the long jump. Stevens teamed up with Eric Blanchard, Hayden Nichol and Lance Hanson to win the 4×100 relay as well.
Both the boys and girls won the team competition handily.
“Everywhere I looked, every coach was talking about how kids are PR’ing,” Keys said. “They’re putting in a lot of hard work every week and their bodies are beat up and tired, but they’re still PR’ing. It’s all going really good.”
Keys said he was also appreciative of the massive turnout of school and district staffers to help put the meet on.
“The kids love it because they know all the teachers and school staff,” he said. “I always liked that when I was competing at Sweet Home.”
Thursday, April 5, the Huskies competed with Sutherlin at Elmira, both teams winning there as well in a rain-soaked afternoon.
The Huskies will travel to Sisters Thursday, April 12, for a chance to compete in the facility that will host this year’s district meet. The Meet of Champions follows on Saturday for those who have qualified, at 11 a.m. at Willamette University.
