The Sweet Home track and field teams got off to a good start, with a score of personal records set in its first meet of the season Thursday, March 19, a non-scoring competition with North Salem, Cascade and North Marion.
Sam Macklin and Alex Santana set personal bests in the 100 and 200 and led the 4×400 and 4×100 relay teams, which included some runners new to high school track, to victory.
Marc Callagan set a personal best in the shot put, 49-0, and Byron Sanders clocked his fastest time ever in the 1500 in 4:41.40, while Dustin Collman won the pole vault with a jump of 12-0.
Rob Callagan ran two minutes flat to win the 800, then turned in a 54.3-second split in the 4×400 relay.
“It felt good to see the top kids starting off where they left off,” Coach Billy Snow said.
He said he was particularly pleased by the 4×100 relay team that ran 44.87 to open the season after losing two key seniors to graduation.
“For that relay to go 44.87, that was awesome,” Snow said. “We have two new legs on the team and you have to remember we lost our fastest guy (Land Florek) from last year. Yet here they are right back in the 44s, and that’s with the two returners in different positions.”
Though the girls are not returning a lot of veterans, they still opened some eyes, particularly the newcomers.
Defending district champion Maria Kropf ran 12.95 in the 100 to start her season not far from where she left off last year and anchored a team of rookies to a 52.22 finish in the 4×100.
Freshman Annie Whitfield won the javelin in her first high school meet, finishing with 111-9.
Sophomore Olivia Johnson won the 1500 in 5:45.83, two seconds off her lifetime best.
Senior Jenny Hamn, who is relatively new to track and field, established herself as a force to contend with in the district shot put race when she opened her season with a throw of 32-4.
Caroline Amendola, another sophomore, led most of the way in the 800 before taking second in 2:44.2, then ran a leg on the 4×400 relay and pole vaulted 6-6.
“Caroline had a heck of a meet,” Snow said.
Other bright spots were freshman Brandi Trewin’s third-place finish in the high jump (4-6) and sophomore Kaitlin Keenon’s second place in the pole vault (8-0), both events in which the Huskies were weak or had no competitors last season.
Another was Jessica Snow, who opened her season with a 1:09.02 in the 400 and anchored the 4×400 relay to second place in 4:36.81.
“We were encouraged,” Billy Snow said. “Some of those events will drop off a lot when we take the top person away, so we have to find kids to fill in the third and fourth places. But we will. Half the team is just so young, they’re just feeling their way through. There are going to be some contributors among the freshmen.
“The kids have to keep their nose to the grindstone, and keep working.”
