Track team faces top talent, discovers its own

Despite some challenging weather, Sweet Home’s track and field team got a workout Saturday against some of the top area small-school talent – and discovered some of its own – at the Junction City Invitational Saturday.

Sweet Home’s boys finished seventh with 503 points, that was won by Philomath (866). The Philomath girls also won, with 846.5 points, with Sweet Home finishing sixth (648).

The biggest winner of the day was David Skeen, who was the only first-place finisher for the Huskies in the meet that included driving rain and big winds.

“The weather was lousy,” said Coach Billy Snow. “We had headwinds and spitting rain.”

Skeen won the javelin with an eight-foot PR of 151-9 on his final throw that ranked him at No. 5 in the state going into this week.

“It was nice to see him win that,” Snow said of the senior, who had won a couple of smaller meets in the shot and the javelin during his high school career, but never a big, multi-team event.

Other bright spots were Jade Corliss, who placed second in the girls shot (35-5) and Josie Knight who was sixth in the shot with an effort of 30-4½ – in her second time in the event.

“Josie’s found a new event,” said Snow of the freshman, who has previously focused more on the sprints and long jump.

In the girls 300 hurdles, sophomore India Porter was second in 52.26, which, Snow said, was “a good time in those conditions.”

Haley Kent had “a great day,” taking third in the 100 (14.07) and Karly Newport continued her improvement in the 200 with a 30.59 and 1:09.43 in the 400, both PRs that Snow said were “not bad in that weather.”

Ashton Stutzman, in his first high jump competition of the year, cleared 5-10 to place second on misses.

In the distances, Nicole Rasmussen was a distant second to Siuslaw’s Katie Potter in the 1500, running 5:15.53 in windy conditions that prompted her to hang back with Junction City’s Hannah Bolton for much of the race.

“5:15 is a good time in those conditions,” Snow said.

Ian Wingo (10:22.80) and Justin Webb (10:24.58) ran “good” races in the 3000, which, like the other distance events, was won by Siuslaw runners.

Sweet Home will travel to Cottage Grove Tuesday, and then athletes who have posted qualifying times or marks will be in Salem Saturday for the Meet of Champions. Field events begin at 11:30 a.m. and action on the track kicks off at 1 p.m.

“It’s a great meet,” Snow said. “It’s a format you don’t normally see in high school – a focus on the individual. And the stadium is like a miniature Hayward Field.

“And it’s going to be sunny,” he predicted.

Sweet Home vs. Elmira, La Pine

In the Huskies’ first scoring meet of the season, the Husky girls outscored Elmira (67.5) and La Pine (31) with 74.5 points. The boys placed third with 44.5 points, behind La Pine (70) and Elmira (54.5).

Winners for the boys were the short relay team of Eric Flierl, Trever Olson, Chace Hutchins and Spencer Knight (46.57), the long relay team of Flierl, Olson, Hutchins and Jakob Hiett (3:49.09), Ian Wingo in the 3000 (10:42.20); Eric Flierl in the 300 Hurdles (45.26) and Brycen Mitten in the triple jump (38-5).

On the girls side, both relay teams won; the short relay of Haley Kent, India Porter, Sabrina Davis and Josie Knight running 53.94 and the 4×400 team of Porter, Nicole Rasmussen, Sierra Swanson and Alex Olin running 4:36.07.

Kent won the 200 (29.01) after getting nipped by two-hundredths of a second by Elmira’s Allia Petersen in the 100 (13.85), Porter won the 400 (1:04.96) and 300 Hurdles in a personal-record 52.10, Rasmussen won the 800 in a personal-best 2:32.54 and the 1500 in 5:11.25, and Jade Corliss won the shot (34-8) and the discus (81-11).
