Track teams head for districts after tune-up meets

Sweet Home’s varsity runners tuned up for districts Friday, May 5, at the Wally Chiochetti Invitational at Cottage Grove.

In a field of 17 teams, representing most of the top schools in the 4A division, the Huskies didn’t have the manpower to finish high in the team scoring. Both the boys and girls finished 16th.

Sophomore Tanner Sayers posted his fourth straight PR in the 3000 over the past three weeks, running 9:47.46 to shave two seconds and change off his previous best for eighth place in a field of 30 runners.

Noah Dinsfriend, also a sophomore, was seventh in the 300 hurdles, in 43.21, also a personal best for him.

For the girls, Dana Hiett was seventh in the triple jump, with a leap of 31-5½. Freshman Megan Hager was the only other Husky to finish in the top 10 in an event, throwing 91-7 to place 10th in the discus.

The district meet begins Thursday, May 11, at Sutherlin, with field events starting at 11 a.m. and track events, most of them preliminaries, at 1 p.m. Finals in most events will be Saturday, which follows the same schedule.

The boys 4×400 relay team of Wes Parker, Noah Taraski, Lance Hanson and Nathan Hager looks to have promising prospects for making state, with an eighth-place ranking in the 4A going into district.

The 4×100 team of Nick Rietz, Austin Stevens, Hayden Nichol and Justin Carpenter have the third-best time in the league.

The Huskies look strong in the pole vault, with Eric Blanchard leading the league with a 13-1 jump earlier this season and Dillon Stutzman ranked third.

Austin Stevens is ranked second in the long jump and Wes Parker is tied for third in the triple in the rankings.

Sophomore Noah Dinsfriend has been steadily improving in the 300 hurdles, with repeated PR’s in recent weeks, and is standing third going into district. Fellow sophomore Tanner Sayers has moved up the rankings in the 3000, with PR’s in the event in each of his last four races.

Despite their lack of numbers, intensified by the loss of multiple state placewinner Bethany Gingerich to a leg injury, the Huskies look to be competitive in many events, including several field events on the girls side.

Going into the district meet, senior Dana Hiett, the only other Sweet Home girl with state experience, is ranked first in the triple jump, in which she qualified last year. Freshman Zoe James is ranked fifth in the 400 and second in the high jump, and freshman Megan Hager is second in the discus.

Cottage Grove JV Invite

The JV Invite, which included all the Sky-Em teams except Sisters, along with 2A Monroe and Oakland, and 1A Triangle Lake and Umpqua Valley Christian, provided an opportunity for the younger Huskies to establish themselves for the varsity district meet.

The lone winner for Sweet Home was sophomore Jake Swanson, who threw an eight-foot PR of 143-03 in the javelin, which left him ranked 10th in the district in that event.

Freshman Casey Tow was second in the 800 (2:40.43), his first attempt at that event in high school, and third in the javelin, with a PR of 138-6. Brad Wolthuis also placed second, in the pole vault, with a personal best of 9-0.

The boys 4×100 relay of Swanson, Tow, Chase Blanco and Noah Moore placed second in 47.64.

On the girls side, Ria Chiba was the top finisher with a second-place effort of 13-8 in the long jump, in her first attempt at that event. Madelyn Neuschwander was right behind her in third, with a 4½-inch PR of 13-4½.

The two also combined with Shelby Goodwin and Jessi Thomas in a third-place finish in the 4×100 relay, in 57.94.

Sweet Home’s boys placed fourth in the team standings in the field of nine teams, behind Triangle Lake (165), Monroe (78) and Elmira (64). The girls, who only had entrants in six of the 17 events, placed eighth out of nine teams.
