Track teams put up fight, set PRs at Junction City

Sweet Home’s track teams are still trying to find their stride, but they put up a fight Saturday at the Junction City Invitational.

Spring break seemed to help some of the athletes, as they had “a ton of PRs,” according to Coach Billy Snow. “We competed very well,” he said.

Newport won the boys team competition, scoring 726.5 points. Sweet Home was fourth with 584.5. In the girls meet, Wilsonville was first with 712.5 points. The Huskies were fifth with 398.

For the boys, Cody Shipp, in his first year of track, had a “huge” day, Snow said, posting personal bests in the 100 (second in 11.80), the 200 (third in 23.30) and the long jump (fifth in 18-8).

The Huskies went one-two in the boys javelin, Alex Brown winning the event with a throw of 160-0 and Nathan Whitfield coming in second at 149-9. All but one of the Husky boys and girls threw a PR in the event, Snow said. Sophomore Kelsey Fisher “PR’d big time” with a throw of 122-04, Snow said.

Whitfield, a junior, placed sixth in the shot with throw of 42-06 — two feet over his previous best.

Junior Brandon Weist, also in his first year of track, had a tough day in the long jump, but nailed a leap of 38-1 1/2 in the triple jump to better his previous record by two feet.

After competing in the heptathlon the week before, Ashley Danielson and Jessica Trautman, who normally specialize in distance events, made their debut in the high jump and both cleared 4-2 to tie for 10th.

The pole vaulters had a difficult day. Snow said that two-thirds of the boys competitors, including all the Huskies, and half of the girls no-heighted in the event. The only Sweet Home vaulter to clear a height was Erika Snow, who placed 11th after she cleared 6-0.

In her first race of the season, Cassandra Schumacher ran a lifetime best of 5:26.5 in the 1500 to place second, and then almost posted another personal best in the 3000, finishing fourth in 12:04.4.

The girls were hindered by their lack of hurdlers, particularly Hannah Swanson, who was ill and only ran in the 4×100 relay.

Snow said a meet like Junction City allows his team to try some new things.

“We had kids do events they don’t usually do,” he said. “We’ve had some kids pigeon-holed in one area, and we’re trying to pull them out and try them in other areas.”

The Huskies hosted Stayton on Tuesday, too late to report the results in this issue, and will travel to North Marion on April 18 for another conference meet.
