We recently received a phone call from a longtime member and volunteer of the Sweet Home Senior Center asking why it was closed.
She had called the Lebanon Senior Center to confirm that it was now open and found it very disappointing to learn Sweet Home’s Center was still closed.
Many of us who knew the individuals whose time, talent and financial resources were dedicated to the creation of the Sweet Home Senior Center are saddened, and even angry, to witness the loss of what was once a welcome place where seniors could share games, talents, companionship and meals.
The Senior Center was governed by an elected board who had the well being of Sweet Home’s seniors as their objectives. One of the services provided was transportation, but it was not the dominant program.
Volunteers were welcomed, respected and honored for their service. Unfortunately, much of that has changed in the past few years and this past year seems to have been the “final straw.”
Perhaps it is time for the transportation program to move to a different location and the Senior Center to once again be governed by the elected board and opened to Sweet Home’s seniors.
