Tree provides chances to give

Editor:

We are grateful to the people in our community that give generously during the Christmas season.

Once again it’s time to begin the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District “Christmas for Kids Sharing Tree Program.” Also, the Sweet Home Emergency Ministry (SHEM) will be coordinating the “Christmas Food Basket” program as well.

Individuals or families who wish to have a child’s name placed on the “Christmas Sharing Tree” will need to fill out a request form that can be picked up at the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District office at 1099 Long Street, beginning Monday, Oct. 19. Forms MUST be returned to the fire department by Friday, Nov. 27.

The forms for the food basket program need to be picked up at SHEM, they are located at 1115 Long Street. They will be preparing food baskets for delivery in time for Christmas. For those who would like to donate to the “Christmas Food Basket Program”, SHEM accepts cash, clothing and non-perishable food items. Your contribution to this much needed program is very appreciated.

Cash donations to the “Christmas for Kids Sharing Tree” toy program may be made at the Fire and Ambulance District office located at 1099 Long Street, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. All cash donations will be used to purchase toys and needed clothing for local children.

The names of children and families needing assistance will be placed on the “Sharing Tree” at the Fire Department starting Monday, Nov. 6.

In 2014 approximately 450 children and over 190 families requested assistance during the Christmas season. The needs in our community increase every year, and this year we anticipate the same.

The “Sharing Tree” toy program works like this: The names of children and families are written on tags that are then placed on the tree. Anyone wanting to help those is need are asked to come to the Fire Station at 1099 Long Street, and choose a name or names from the tree. Purchase the item(s) on the tag, wrap the gifts, and then return them to the Fire Department by December 10, 2015. The tags that are left on the sharing tree will be taken by the local fire department personnel who will purchase gifts to fill those requests. Those requesting gifts will be able to pick up their gifts from the Fire Department beginning Dec. 15 and 16.

Sometimes we have those in our community that are able to provide generously for more than one child and would like to sponsor a whole family. If that is you, we have the “Adopt a Family” form for you and you can may contact the fire district office at (541) 367-5882. We will have family groups available for you!

These programs continue to bless so many families in our community every year. Please support the “Christmas for Kids Sharing Tree” and Sweet Home Emergency Ministry” (SHEM). Your support and generosity reaches the hearts of so many, and the families that you help are so very grateful! Merry Christmas!
