Two Sweet Home Junior High wrestling team members captured state championships Saturday at Woodburn.
Bo Christianson earned the title in the 110 pound weight division and Shane Vandehei was crowned champion in the 95 pound weight class. The tournament attracted grapplers in grades 6-8 from around the state.
Pendleton won the team title, followed by Eagle Point, Estacada and Sweet Home.
This was Christianson’s first state bid as a sixth grader.
Vandehei climaxed the season, having already earned championships at the Oregon Classic and Northwest Championships.
Other Sweet Home wrestlers competing included: Travis Pugh, 75 pounds, second; Cody Sells, 90 pounds, sixth; Chris Rivera, 145 pounds, eighth; Tom Helfrich, 115; Colton Cooley, 122; Chris Sells, 129 and Brian Lindsay, 136.
Coaches were Ivan Vandehei and Shannon Stover.
“Our junior high program ended competition a month ago,” Husky head Coach Steve Thorpe said. “It was a real commitment on the part of the coaches and wrestlers to keep going. There isn’t a lag period for the city schools, whose seasons run right up until the tournament.”
