Two Mat Club wrestlers win titles at Oregon Kids Classic

Two Sweet Home Mat Club wrestlers won championships at the Oregon Kids Classic in Redmond Saturday.

Colton Schilling won the 75-pound Novice division while Kris Newport won the 119-pound Cadet category.

High School Coach Steve Thorpe said the last time the Mat Club had an individual champion was when Shane Vandehei won in 2002.

Schilling posted eight falls and one 7-0 decision en route to the title, while Newport had pinned four opponents, won one decision and had one loss before winning the finals bout.

Classic Champion is one of the most prestigous kids awards in the Northwest as it draws kids from the surrounding states and from as far away as Canada, Coach Steve Schilling said.

“We felt going into the Classic we had a couple kids that could do really well and several that could place, but you never know until you get there,” he said.

“Unfortunately, two of our kids had pretty tough draws early which put them out of the tournament.”

Newport came into the tournament season records of 24-2 in Mat Club action and 7-0 in junior high school competition, while Schilling amassed a 31-0 Mat Club record and is 8-0 in junior high action.

Also medaling were: Mitch Groves, third at 103-pound Cadet; Nate Melcher, fourth at 140-pound Novice and Brenton Rice, fourth at 55-pound Bantam.

Other wrestlers who competed for the Mat Club were Chris Melcher, Barrett Stephens, Brandon Keenon, Mat Pitts and Austin Bruijin.
