Bethany Gingerich and Dana Hiett were the sole winners for Sweet Home Saturday, April 8, at the Junction City Invitational track meet.
Gingerich won the 200 and 400 and Hiett took first in the triple jump as the girls placed seventh out of 11 teams in the meet.
Sweet Home’s lack of depth has been furthered by the sudden transfer of senior Trey Reed to Scio. Reed won both the 200 and 400 on Saturday. The Husky boys finished fourth as a team, with 637 points behind Junction City (969), Siuslaw (690) and Scio (689.5).
“It was a good meet,” said Head Coach Dakotah Keys, noting that the Huskies had hosted a meet of their own on Thursday, which was “as close as you can get without being back-to-back.”
Sweet Home’s boys won Thursday’s meet behind first-place finishes by Nick Rietz in the 200, Tanner Sayers in the 3000, Noah Dinsfriend in the 300 hurdles, Casey Tow in the high jump, Dillon Stutzman in the pole vault, and both relays.
The girls were third in a field of six teams, behind Sutherlin and Elmira. Winners for the Huskies were Zoe James in the 400, Bethany Gingerich in the 300 hurdles, Meghan Hager in the discus and Dana Hiett in the triple jump.
“Both performances were good,” Keys said of the meets.
He said the boys distance runners did well on Saturday, with several personal bests.
Sophomore Tanner Sayers posted PRs in both the 3000 (10:16.57) and the 1500 (4:41.71).
Although the relay teams didn’t win, Keys said they looked “great” on Saturday.
On the girls side, senior Gracie Olson PR’d in both the javelin (67-10) and the pole vault (7-6) – in the rain, Keys noted.
“They’re maximizing right now. It’s going really good for them.”
The Huskies will compete on the road for the next two weeks, at Junction City on April 13 and at Sutherlin on April 20.
“They’re still working hard during the week, then going out and running hard,” Keys said. “Some of the shorter runners are doing longer sprints to get the workout in for right now.
“Everyone’s having fun now and that’s how it should be.”
