Vandals’ shots leave windows broken

A rash of broken windows along Main Street in Sweet Home has shopkeepers angry and police looking for one or more people who have been shooting out the panes with a BB or pellet gun.

Since the beginning of September, at least four windows have been broken, Police Chief Bob Burford said.

Businesses that have lost windows include Los Dos Amigos Mexican restaurant at 3103 Main, Periwinkle’s Provisions at 1101 Main, A&W Restaurant at 1111 Main and Sweet Home Florist and Gift at 1231 Main, Burford said..

“This type of criminal conduct has absolutely no purpose but to damage property of innocent business owners,” he said. “Most likely, it’s taking place from a moving car and is taking place well after business hours.”

Jami Lynn, owner of Sweet Home Florist, said her window was broken on the night of Sept. 24. Lynn said she’s bothered that someone shows so little concern for others – and is costing her $375 for a new window pane.

“I think it’s disgusting that people feel the need vandalize other people’s property,” she said. “We’re a small business. It leaves a sour taste in your mouth. It make you mad.”

She said passersby have expressed outrage over the vandalism, which, she said, has also extended to the old and new Steelhead Gym facilities.

Burford said it’s possible that drivers in vehicles behind the vehicle from which the shootings are likely taking place may not be aware that anything is happening.

But, he said, the police would like to hear from anyone who has any helpful information, at 367-5181.

“Any information can be treated as confidential,” Burford said.
