Vera Corrine Gabriel

Vera Corrine Gabriel, 66, died Sept. 25. The cause of death is under investigation.

She was delivered at home in Genry, Ark., on Feb. 7 to John and Zelma McCuistian. She married Keith Gabriel Feb. 12, 1960 in Sweet Home. He died June 3, 2001.

When she was 9, her family moved from Gentry to Sweet Home. She graduated from Sweet Home Union High School in 1957 and from Tulsa Business College in Tulsa, Okla., in 1958.

After returning to Sweet Home, she worked for Timber Service, Santiam Lumber, Paul Hardeman, Inc., Boise Cascade, Hanscam and Casto and Barringer and Associates. She also served as executive secretary to the project manager for Green Peter Dam, as a bookkeeper, a notary public and office manager. Her work ethic, professionalism and positive personality made her a sought-after employee. She retired in 1986.

Mrs. Gabriel enjoyed shopping, sitting in the sun, decorating, reading, dancing and music. During her retirement, she learned to hand-piece quilts. She made nine quilts and had started a 10th.

In 2003 she was diagnosed with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, a fatal degenerative disease.

She is survived by: her mother, Rose Zelma Hoskins McCuistian of Sweet Home; daughter Kelly Gabriel of Eugene; son Martin Gabriel, daughter-in-law Dawnita and grandson Hayden of Sweet Home; sisters Jo Ella Lutton of Lebanon, Wanda Vinson of Eugene, Johnny Ruth Kyriss of Albany; brothers Marion McCuistian of Fair Oaks Texas, and Michael McCuistian of Eugene; and many nieces and nephews. Her father, John Long McCuistian and husband Keith Lamar Gabriel preceded her in death.

Graveside services will be held Saturday, Oct. 1, at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home at 1 p.m., followed by a memorial service at approximately 2 p.m. at River of life Fellowship in Sweet Home.
