Vernon A. Sturdevant, 73, of Sweet Home died July 10, 2009.
He was born April 13, 1936 in Tipton, Ind. to Garland B. and E. Madeline (Hand) Sturdevant.
He served in the Army from 1961 to 1965. He was on active duty from 1961 to 1963.
Mr. Sturdevant lived many places because his father was in construction. He married Donna Long on Aug. 17, 1963.
A certified welder and millwright, he moved to Sweet Home in 1965 to work on construction of Green Peter Dam.
He attended Church of Christ at 37th and Long Street in Sweet Home. He enjoyed working in his shop and loved science fiction.
Mr. Sturdevant is survived by his wife Donna Long Sturdevant of Sweet Home; children Jaylene and her husband Michael Wong of San Jose, Calif., Michael and his wife Sophary Sturdevant of Beaverton, and Vicki and her husband Rick Jackson of Halfway; siblings Charles C. Sturdevant of Bakersfield, Calif., M. Ann Graves of Lewiston, Idaho, Thomas L. Sturdevant of Lebanon, Ronald G. Sturdevant of Roswell, N.M., and Jerry W. Sturdevant of Silver City, N.M.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father, Garland B. Sturdevant, on Aug. 11, 1984, and mother Madeline Hand Sturdevant on Oct. 25, 2007.
A memorial service is planned from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Sturdevant home.
