VFW plans dinner to buy Bataan march mile marker

A fund raising dinner prepared by Juan Ulep will be held October 16 at 6 p.m. at the VFW Hall to purchase a memorial mile marker commemorating the Bataan Death March.

Cost is $10 for adults or $5 for children under age 10.

After the invasion of the Philippine in 1941, som 70,000 American and Philippino troops were captured by the Japanese and forced on a 65 mile death march from the Baatan Peninsula to Camp O’Donnel. Nearly one out of every six (11,000) died.

Today, this road is being remembered by the Philippine American Memorial Endowment and is marking the highway with Kilo/Mile markers. A plaque on the side of each marker will indicate the name of the sponsoring VFW post. Each marker costs $500.

The Sweet Home VFW will be the sponsor of marker #26.
