VFW Post remodels kitchen

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Sweet Home Post is remodeling its kitchen, which is often used for communitywide events and fund-raising efforts.

The VFW is completely stripping and remodeling everything in the kitchen, Post Commander Jim Allyn said. That means new stoves, ovens, deep fryers, sinks, prep table, floors, drains and water lines.

“We’re going to be part of the 21st century,” Allyn said chuckling. “Everything is going to be modern and up to date. Hopefully, we don’t have to worry about it again the rest of our lives.”

The old equipment was breaking down, Allyn said. To fix the equipment breaking down meant upgrading it.

Rather than upgrading and repairing the kitchen here and there, the VFW decided to replace it all.

Much of the work is being handled by VFW volunteers, he said, but the VFW has contracted with EC Electric and Servco for plumbing.

Funding is provided by the Sweet Home Post, he said.

He expects the new kitchen to be open for business within the next three weeks, he said.

The kitchen is used for funeral dinners, fund-raising dinners and special events, such as the all-veterans dinner and regular visits by Roseburg Veterans’ Hospital patients.

The VFW greatly appreciates those who donate, cash or labor, he said. For more information, call the post at 367-4435.
