Virgil Stafford

Virgil (Bud) Stafford, 82, died at his son’s home in Prineville on Jan. 15, 2010.

He was born Oct. 31, 1927 in Versailles, Mo., to William “Buck” Stafford and Minnie Rachel Swearengin. He joined the Army in 1945.

He married and moved to Sweet Home with his family in 1951 where he started logging. He logged around the Sweet Home area for many years.

He moved to Bend in 1987 and then to Prineville, where he worked filing saw chains until 2008. He retired at 81.

He is survived by a brother, John Stafford of Versailles, Mo.; four sons and their families, Phil and Jolee Stafford, Terry Stafford, Jeff and Patty Stafford of Sweet Home, and Steve Stafford of Prineville; and seven daughters and their families, Linda and Ron Moore of Sweet Home, Lona and Matt Kutcher of Prineville, Kellie and Tracy Vavrosky of Wilsonville, Lisa and Dean Shamek of Bend, Stephani Stafford of Salem, Stacie and Ken Bailey of Washougal, Wash., and Briona Stafford of Bend. Survivors also include 24 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Stafford was preceded in death by son Brian Stafford and 11 brothers and sisters.

Donations can be made to Hospice of Prineville in Mr. Stafford’s name instead of flowers.

Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, 2010, at Gilliland Cemetery in Sweet Home. A gathering for family will be held at 2 p.m. at Sweet Home Senior Center.
