Sweet Home was missing three boys and two girls in its dual swim meet against Salem Academy Friday, and the Huskies’ lack of depth shows up big in the final score, as the visitors won both competitions, 86-82 for the girls and 109-51 for the boys.
It was the girls’ first dual meet loss of the season.
“We found out what lack of depth will cost you,” Coach Doug Peargin said. “On the boys side, lack of depth just killed us and on the girls side we used depth to help us, but just came up a little bit short.
“I think we swam well as a team, but we knew Salem was going to be real tough.”
The good news was that personal bests were plentiful – 17 on the girls side and nine on the boys.
“You can tell by those PRs that we swam a heck of a meet,” Peargin said.
Winners for the boys were Grant Jones in the 500 Freestyle, Ryan Yon in the 200 Freestyle and Jaegar Howatt in the 50 Freestyle. Jessica Coats was a double winner for the girls in the 200 IM and 100 Butterfly, and Esther Gunselman added a win in the 50 Freestyle.
The Huskies will get a chance to swim at South Albany Saturday, Jan. 25, at the pre-district meet in the pool where the district competition will be held. The meet is scheduled to start at 8 a.m.
