Sweet Home’s volleyball team notched its first win of the season, in its opener, downing Gladstone 3-0 at home Tuesday, Aug. 30.
Scores were 25-17, 25-8 and 25-9.
The Huskies ran out to an 11-0 lead before easing up and letting the visitors back into the game a bit.
“We came out a little flat after our very good performance at the jamboree (five days earlier),”Coach Mary Hutchins said. “We missed too many serves in the first set and just didn’t get our normal team energy going.”
Things improved in the second and third games, she said, as Sweet Home served well and “controlled the ball on our side of the court and finished much stronger.”
The Huskies will host Philomath, generally one of the better 4A-Division teams in the state, on Thursday, Sept. 9, after traveling to Woodburn on Sept. 7.
“We have some personnel missing for that game so we will be using a “new- to-us” lineup and hoping to really build on our team chemistry this week and start dialing some things in so that we can have a good performance,”: We have a tourney at Cascade this coming Saturday so that should help get lots of playing experience and quality touches on the ball and also see a lot of different 4A teams and what they have to offer.
