Volleyball: Sweet Home alums help lift LBCC to regional win

Linn-Benton Community College defeated Columbia Basin 3-0 in the NWAC Volleyball Championship Southern Regional to advance to the Elite 8, which starts Friday, Nov. 18, at Pierce College in Lakewood, Wash.

The Roadrunners (31-1), who are NWAC defending champions, will be the No. 1 seed from the South Regional.

Set scores were 25-14, 25-17 and 25-19.

Shalyn Gray (South Umpqua) led the Roadrunners in the match with 11 kills and also added 10 digs, while Zaley Bennett (South Albany) and former Sweet Home player Savannah Hutchins had 19 and 12 assists, respectively. 

Columbia Basin defeated Everett 3-1 in Sunday’s second match to earn the No. 2 seed from the South Regional into the Elite 8. The regional tournament was hosted by LBCC.

On Saturday, Nov. 12, Linn-Benton defeated Everett 3-0 in a first-round match, 25-16, 25-22 and 25-22.

Shelbey Nichol, also a Sweet Home alum, led the Roadrunners with 14 kills and three blocks. Hutchins posted 27 assists in that match. Grace Boeder (West Albany) added 10 kills while hitting .600 for Linn-Benton.

Linn-Benton will open the Elite 8 Friday afternoon agains Highline, the No. 2 seed from the West Regional.
