Volleyball team struggles in close losses to league foes

Taft 25, 25, 13, 25

Sweet Home 20, 19, 25, 22

Philomath 26, 25, 24, 25

Sweet Home 24, 22, 26, 21

The Sweet Home volleyball team lost to Taft in four games at home on Thursday night.

“Taft was scrappy, but other than that we weren’t ready for their offensive speed,” Coach Debbie Danielson said. Taft’s timing is odd, and it frustrated the Huskies.

The team served just 81 percent on the game, Danielson said, and its serve-receive score was just 1.33, as the Huskies struggled with communication.

Sarah Rosa led Husky serving, going 7-8. She also led on serve-receive, with a score of 2. Paige Niemi and Jess Seiber led hitting with five kills each.

On Tuesday last week, Philomath defeated a struggling Huskies team in four games on the road.

The Huskies served at 85 percent with Niemi leading the way 16-16. Sam Johnson had seven kills and seven digs while Seiber had five kills and eight digs to her credit.

“We are a better team, but we didn’t put the ball away,” Danielson said. Philomath didn’t block, choosing to run more players on defense, while the Huskies committed 22 attack errors on the match.

Thursday, the Huskies will face Newport.

“Newport’s very strong,” Danielson said. “We beat them in the Jamboree, but they’ll come out competing. They have strong seniors and hitters, but they are beatable. We’re just going to have to play a good all-around game like we did at Central.”

The young Huskies lost to Central two weeks ago, but the team played well, Danielson said.

“They have to start believing they can win,” she said.
