Volunteers needed for Ames Creek cleanup on May 19

Sweet Home will join an organization called SOLV and other communities around the state on May 19 for the sixth annual “Down by the Riverside.”

SOLV, formerly Stop Oregon Litter and Vandalism, promotes the annual river enhancement, cleanup and appreciation day.

The event will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Volunteers will meet at City Hall and travel to Ames Creek, primarily between 12th Avenue and Main Street to remove blackberry vines and work in the creek.

Persons should bring work gloves, water and a lunch. Local organizers are working with local businesses to provide refreshments and door prizes. Persons also may want to bring a towel and a change of clothes if working in the creek.

Volunteers also will work in Northside and Sankey parks, including some painting projects.

Down by the Riverside drew nearly 3,000 volunteers last year. It is aimed at keeping Oregon’s waterways beautiful.

The local project is part of the second phase of the Ames Creek Restoration Project and is sponsored by a number of local agencies and groups.

For information or to volunteer, persons should call 367-8113.
