Walter Volkers

Walter W. “Butch” Volkers, 64, of Sweet Home, died Feb. 18, 2008 at his home.

He was born Oct. 18, 1943 in West Terre Haute, Ind., to Ernie and Katherine (Ellingsworth) Volkers.

He attended schools in Arizona. He enlisted in the U.S. Army serving in Vietnam as a demolition enginer. In 1981 he married Dorothy Zivello in Reno, Nev. They moved to Sweet Home and he has been here since.

He worked as a police officer for 12 years, tended bar at many locations in the Sweet Home area and has managed bars and restaurants.

Mr. Volkers was a previous commander for the VFW post here in Sweet Home in 1988 and 1989.

Some of his favorite activities included casinos, video poker, cribbage, fishing and hunting and spending time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his sons, Skip of Tulare, Calif., Andy of Sweet Home and Tony Zivello of Arizona; a daughter, Alicia Volkers of Sweet Home; five brothers, Ed, Phillip and Marv all of Sweet Home, Andrew of Libby, Mont. and John of New Jersey; three sisters, Ernestine Kelley of Orlando, Fla., Mary Anna Fry of San Antonio, Texas, Ruth Hefner of Moline, Ill.; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lawrence and Jerome.

Memorial contributions can be made in his memory to St. Helen’s Catholic Church Food Bank.

A Memorial Mass was celebrated on Feb. 23 at St. Helen’s Catholic Church in Sweet Home, with private inurnment at Gilliland Cemetery.
