Water polo out in the open

Teams from throughout the West Coast converged on Lewis Creek Park last week for the second Nike Open Water Tournament at Foster Lake. Twenty-four boys and girls teams competed in the event, which drew one team from Albuquerque, N.M. and others from central California, the Seattle and Portland areas, and the more local Willamette Valley Water Polo program in Salem and Albany. Bellevue, Wash. Rain City’s Under-14 boys team played up to win the Under-16 bracket and its Under-16 boys team did the same, winning the Under-18 bracket. American River of Sacramento won the Under-16 and Under-18 girls competitions. Willamette Valley, which includes athletes from Albany and the Salem areas, was second in the Under-16 boys and third in the Under-18 girls.
