Even though the Huskies lost in their rematches against Redmond on Saturday, coach Rene Kirkland wasn’t disappointed with her teams. The boys were defeated 7-2 and the girls 13-2.
What she was disappointed with in the boys contest was Redmond’s style of play, which started out with an undisciplined scrappiness that turned violent toward the end of the game.
After a strong week of practice, she wasn’t sure that the game helped them show it.
“I have a hard time coaching my kids to defend against Redmond’s type of play,” said Kirkland.
It got so bad at one point that, with three minutes to go, the leading Husky scorer, Sean Martin, climbed out of the pool, saying he couldn’t play that way anymore. In hindsight, Kirkland thinks she should have called an end to the game.
“It was a negative experience for the kids,” she stated. “Overall I was proud how they worked against that and still held on to what we worked on and not succumb to retaliation.”
Jeff Stratman scored both Husky goals from his position in the hole.
The Huskies did not face the same problem in the girls game. They simply couldn’t generate the offense they needed to by passing accurately. But they stayed upbeat throughout the game and had a good fourth quarter.
“The last quarter ws beautiful,” said Kirkland. “I commend them for sticking together.”
Amber Larsen tossed in both goals, one from the hole position and the other from the wing.
A previously scheduled match with North Eugene was canceled when they showed up a day early for the game.
