Water polo team drops last three matches

Sweet Home’s water polo squad finished the season with three losses to bigger teams.

Madras 13, Sweet Home 3

The Huskies faced Madras Oct. 12 in a non-league contest and, despite a strong defensive effort by Sweet Home, Madras had a 4-0 lead after the first quarter as the White Buffaloes took advantage of turnovers and their superior swimming speed.

The Huskies made adjustments in the second and third quarters that allowed the Huskies to score from set offense but the end result was a 13-3 lopsided victory.

Senior Jake Johnson who scored all of the Huskies’ goals. “Madras is a fairly new team on the rise,” Coach Craig Martin said. “This is their third year as a program and they have nearly 30 athletes turning out for the program. Their depth and skill is making them a top contender in the state for boys water polo.”

Corvallis/Crescent Valley 12, Sweet Home 10

The Huskies won the first league meeting with Corvallis but the second turned into a see-saw affair in which Sweet Home’s defensive pressure wasn’t enough to stop Corvallis’ swimming speed. The first quarter ended in a 4-4 tie, and there were seven tie scores in the remainder of the game. In the fourth quarter some minor defensive breakdowns allowed Corvallis to score four unanswered goals and, althought the Huskies rallied late, it wasn’t enough.

“We had a lot of offensive opportunities during the game that we did not capitalize on,” Martin said. “We match up very well strength wise and had we been able to get the ball past the goalie (the Huskies were 10 for 24 shooting) on those opportunities the outcome would have definitely favored our team.”

Scoring for the Huskies were Jake Johnson (6), Sten Weld (3) and Elric Benson (1). Husky Goalie Michael Mosier had 12 saves to contribute to the defensive effort of the Huskies.

West Albany 6, Sweet Home 2

In its final game, at home, Sweet Home once again lacked the speed to match up with the Bulldogs.

Jake Johnson scored both of the Huskies’ goals.
