Water polo teams head for playoffs

Sweet Home ended its regular water polo season Monday at South Albany in what Coach Craig Martin described as a “barn-burner” of a match.

The Huskies lost 10-9 in double overtime after finishing the fourth period tied 7-7 with the Rebels.

But because Sweet Home beat South Albany by four goals earlier this season, the Huskies will move on to the qualifying tournament for the state playoffs this weekend, again at South Albany.

“The boys played exceptionally well,” Martin said. “We basically had the game won four or five times but our bench was a little shallow due to illness and they were really tired at the end.”

Gabe Gunselman led Sweet Home with four goals, followed by two each from Jake Johnson and Derek Jaques, and one from Cory Martin.

The girls did not play Monday but have also qualified for the playoff tournament this weekend.

Sweet Home will be the number two seed, behind West Albany, on both the boys and girls side and will face teams from the Central Oregon League, which was still determining its playoff teams on Monday and Tuesday of this week.

The girls are scheduled to play at 12:40 p.m. Saturday and the boys at 1:50 in the single-elimination tournament. Winners will proceed to the state tournament Nov. 13 and 14 at Tualatin Hills.
