Despite some pouring rain that created adverse conditions Friday, April 26, Sweet Home athletes produced some personal bests and two wins against mostly 5A-Division competition Friday, April 26, at the Rob Allen Twilight Invitational at Lebanon.
“The kids who were there did pretty well,” Coach Nathan Whitfield said. “There were some that stepped up, did awesome. It just dumped rain on us the first half of meet. Some had a little trouble preparing for that.”
The Huskies’ two winners of the day were junior Kasey Kast in the 800, in a season’s best 2:06.22, and sophomore McKenzie Miller, first in the 3000 in a 17-second PR of 11:27.17.
“McKenzie did good,” Whitfield said. “Her 1500 didn’t go exactly how she wanted, but she came back in the 3000 and did really good.”
The competition included six 5A-Division teams, along with East Linn Christian, which is shaping up to be a state contender at the state 2A level, but the Sweet Home boys finished sixth with 35 points, one behind ELCA, and the girls were eighth with 12 points, one behind St. Helens. Lebanon won the boys competition with 132 points, ahead of Bend (116), and Dallas won the girls with 127, ahead of Lebanon (119). East Linn’s girls were fifth, with 42 points.
“We had some kids with injuries and some who were sick, so we kind of got hit with the whole gamut,” Whitfield said.
Other top finishers for the Huskies included the 4×400 relay team of Kast, Chase Cameron, Dillan Davis and Kyle Sieminski, which was fourth in 3:38.49; senior Colin Nicholson, second in the High Jump (5-10) and third in the Triple Jump (40-2½); freshman Nick Larson, fifth in the 110 Hurdles (18.20); Selah Wright, fourth in the Javelin, fifth in the Discus (88-11) and fifth in the Shot Put in a 31-4 personal best; Miller, fifth in the 1500 in a PR of 5:19.88; and senior Rylee Markell, fourth in the 3000 behind Miller (12:13.55).
“Selah did well,” Whitfield said of the sophomore thrower. “She placed in three events and PR’d in two.”
East Linn junior Daisy Lalonde, who is a Sweet Home resident, won the 1500 in 4:52.19, which was a PR for her.
Sweet Home at Cascade
On Wednesday, April 24, the Huskies competed at Cascade, which won both the boys and girls competitions.
“Cascade was definitely a little more laid-back after the Meet of Champs,” Whitfield said. “We did not necessarily have our best people in some of those events.”
Winners for the Sweet Home boys were junior Conner Stevens in the 200 (25.62), Kast in the 800 (2:09.35), Larson in the 110 (18.45) and 300 (47.70) hurdles; the 4×400 Relay team of Cameron, Kast, Davis and Sieminski (3:37.36; junior Dylan Sharp in the Shot Put (44-6½); and sophomore Elisha Scofield in the pole vault in a PR of 8-0.
For the girls, junior Kaylynn Mamac was first in the 400 in a PR of 1:06.08 and the 300 Hurdles (53.20); freshman Miu Simmons won the 1500 in 6:06.22, the 3000 in 14:15.10, a PR, and the Triple Jump (25-4); and junior Natiyah Koenig-Walters won the Pole Vault in a PR of 7-0, ahead of teammate Delainie Pratt, who also cleared 7-0, but with more misses.
The Huskies host Stayton Tuesday, April 30, and then will send their less experienced
athletes to the Oregon West Conference JV Championships Monday, May 6, at Philomath.
“After Tuesday, we’ll probably start tapering, getting them ready for districts,” Whitfield said of his top performers. The district meet will be May 10-11 at Newport.
“We’ll do that final last push, get them ready for districts and all that end-of-the-year stuff that really matters.”
