Weather does little to slow young Huskies at Pleasant Hill

The weather was awful but the performances from some of the Sweet Home track and field athletes were excellent nonetheless as the Huskies competed at Pleasant Hill Thursday, March 20.

The meet gave Sweet Home a chance to compete against a variety of 4A teams that it may not see again until the state championships. It included Douglas, Elmira, LaPine, Pleasant Hill, Sisters and Sutherlin, along with 3A schools Glide and Waldport, 2A schools Oakridge and Scio and 1A Lowell.

“We actually had some very good marks for the conditions,” said Coach Billy Snow.

The weather ranged from sunshine to driving rain and wind, finishing with snow during the 4×400 relays.

The conditions and some of the runways in the field events didn’t help, but a number of the Huskies came away with season personal bests, Snow said.

“Our 4×100 boys relay ran a second and a half faster — that’s a good improvement,” he said.

The team, with freshman Alex Santana running the anchor, clocked 45.56 to finish second to Scio, which was led by sophomore Coulter Mastenbroek, who also won the 100. Santana took the baton and battled Sisters’ Nick Head down the homestretch, taking a tumble as he leaned into the tape to win the heat.

Snow said it looks like Newport, Central and Sweet Home will be in a dead run in the relay event, as all are running similar times.

First-place finishers for the boys were Dakotah Keys, who won all three individual events he entered — the javelin (174-4), the 300 hurdles (41.53) and the 110 high hurdles (15.34); and Robert Callagan in the 800 (2.05.68); and the 4×400 relay team of Keys, Callagan, Ramiro Santana and Land Florek, who ran 3:43.3. For the girls, Amanda Basham ran 11.26.10 to win the 3,000 — the first time she’s run that race; and Ashley Danielson overcame some rough conditions to throw the javelin 98-6 for first place in that event.

Other top finishes for the boys were Land Florek in the 400 (second in 52.28) and third in the 200 (23.43); Santana (second in the 100 in 11.34); Marc Callagan (fourth in a deep shot put field) and Marcus Delong, who led a 4-5-6-7 finish for the Huskies in the discus.

“Land had a good day. He ran a second off his lifetime best in the 100,” Snow said of Florek, who has been sidelined by an injury. “For a kid who is till trying to get in shape from injury, that’s a pretty solid time.”

He said Keys overcame some rough conditions in his races.

“I told him in the 300 to just survive this,” Snow said. “He was cold and wet. But he still runs a 41.53.”

For the girls, freshman Olivia Johnson was fourth in the 800, the first time she had run that race, edging teammate Danielson by six-tenths of a second to finish 2:45.92; Carissa Swanson was third in the 1500 (5:38.49); Leah Dauley was fifth in the 300 hurdles (58.25) and the girls 4×400 team of Swanson, Basham, Danielson and Jessica Snow was second in 4:42.32.

“Leah (Dauley) is really coming along,” Billy Snow said. “She had a great 300 and she’s really working hard.”

“Every last one of the girls in the 800 ran a PR for this season,” Snow said, noting that the conditions were less than ideal.

He said that he was surprised by Basham and Swanson’s times, running after a “really hard workout on Tuesday.”

Snow said the girls javelin throwers had a good day, despite “terrible conditions.”

He said the only injury that had the potential of being serious was to freshman sprinter and jumper Kelika Kaniaupio, who injured herself in the 100 high hurdles. He said her condition was still being determined.

Some of the Huskies will compete Friday and Saturday at the Sweet Home Decathlon and Heptathlon, beginning at 11 a.m. both days.

Keys will be the favorite in the decathlon, Snow said, but athletes from Crow, Lowell, Pendleton, Salem, Gresham and Crane are among the early registrants for the events.
