Safety fair, free fishing and car show on tap
Summer activities in the Sweet Home area kick off in earnest this weekend with a safety fair, car show and the annual free fishing derby.
The Fifth Annual Jim Bean Memorial Community Safety Fair runs from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 9, at the Sweet Home Police Services building, 1950 Main St.
The free event includes a turn-in drive for prescription drugs, a bike rodeo, free bike registration, a free bike inspection, free bike helmets, free child safety seat inspections, representatives of area police agencies, representatives of the Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District, free hot dogs, free drinks and much more.

The Foster Lake Free Fishing Event will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, June 9, at the swim beach at Lewis Creek County Park.
Organizers plan to release some larger trout this year, including a few over 10 pounds.
There will also be even more learning stations for participants to make fish prints and learn about various elements of the outdoors.
All participants must register before fishing. Fishing on the swim beach will only be allowed during the event and will include:
n Fishing for all kids 14 and under.
n Opportunities for each young angler to fish within a contained area of the lake stocked with 3,000 rainbow trout.
n Prizes for tagged fish.
n Fish Cleaning.
n Free parking.
n All fishing poles, bait, and tackle provided. Use of personal fishing poles and gear will not be allowed.
The event is sponsored by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife/South Santiam Hatchery, the Northwest Steelheaders Association (Albany Chapter), the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Forest Service, Oregon State Police, Linn County Parks and Recreation and the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.

The annual Grampa Tom’s Get-Together will be held at the Cedar Shack, 4102 Highway 20 Saturday morning and afternoon.
The car show features vehicles from inside and outside Sweet Home, including numerous prizes to participants.
Proceeds benefit the American Legion and American Legion Auxiliary in Sweet Home.
