William A.R. Smith, Jr., 71, of Sweet Home died Oct 13, 2006.
He was born Sept. 25, 1935 to William A.R. and Rilda (Stumbaugh) Smith Sr. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was stationed in Okinawa doing electrical work. Upon his return to the states, he started a career in fire fighting. In 1962, he started work for the Las Vegas Fire Department, from which he eventually retired as captain.
Mr. Smith came to Sweet Home in 1998, while his health was declining. He lived the last couple of months in a nursing home in Independence.
He enjoyed camping with his family and playing basketball with his grandson Brandon.
He is survived by his wife, Joan Smith of Sweet Home; daughter, Felicia Smith of Sweet Home; sons, Edward Smith of Pismo Beach, Calif., Robert Smith of Noble, Okla., and Bryant Smith of Las Vegas, Nev.; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, including one great-grandson born just two hours after his death.
One son, Andrew Smith, and a sister, Barbara Erickson, preceded him in death.
No services are scheduled at this time. Workman & Steckly Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
