William Sommers

William Leroy Sommers Sr., 81, a lifelong resident of Sweet Home, died at his home Dec. 30, 2010.

He was born Dec. 30, 1929 in Sweet Home, the son of Verne and Neva (Dunaway) Sommers. He served in the U.S. Army for two years, from 1954 to 1956.

He was married to Sharon J. Pazina in Molalla on June 7, 1957.

Mr. Sommers worked for Willamette Industries at the Foster Plywood Mill for nearly 40 years, retiring in 1989. He also farmed, raising cattle and sheep near Sweet Home for many years. He and his father operated a small sawmill on their property for many years.

He coached Babe Ruth baseball in Sweet Home. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, cutting firewood and reading about history. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandson, Mitchell Walker.

Mr. Sommers is survived by his wife of 53 years, Sharon, of Sweet Home; son William Sommers Jr. of Lebanon; daughter Debbie Sommers of Albany; brother Larry Sommers of Sweet Home; one grandson and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Jack Sommers.

Viewing will be held Friday, Jan. 7, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Huston-Jost Funeral Home in Lebanon. A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, at the Huston-Jost Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Lebanon I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
