Woman rescued after falling down steep bank

At the 3 p.m. hour on Sunday, Oct. 1, Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District and Linn County Sheriff’s Office personnel rescued a hiker who fell down a steep bank below Green Peter Dam on the south side.

The woman was in her 40s, according to SHFAD Chief Nick Tyler, but neither SHFD or LCSO gave the woman’s name.

She was hiking with a friend when the friend dropped her backpack down a bank. She went to retrieve her friend’s backpack, but fell down the slope further. Her efforts to get back up the bank resulted in her slipping further down, according to Tyler.

“Our crews rappelled down to her,” the chief said. “She had no injuries – only needed help out of her situation.”

He added that “Our partners at LCSO assisted with their drone and provided SAR [Search and Rescue] in case it was needed. Oregon Department of Forestry brushed out an old access road and our crews walked her to our side-by-side, where she was driven back up to her friend. She declined any further treatment.”
