Woman rescued after kayak flips, another woman pulls herself ashore

A North River Road man and his son rescued a woman Saturday afternoon from the South Santiam River after she and a friend were flipped out of their kayaks into the water.

Greg Larkin and his son, Alex Ritzman, 15, saw two women clinging to the sides of their kayaks. They put into the river in a drift boat and were able to help one of them, Alissa Melkvik, 26, out of the water.

The second woman, Rebekah Sudia, 21, told rescue workers she floated in the river for about 20 minutes before getting herself out at Pleasant Valley boat ramp. She was transported to Lebanon Community Hospital for possible hypothermia.

The women share a Mark’s Ridge address.

The incident occurred around noon on Saturday.
